September: Charms

Ben waited for his turn to stand up in front of the class to introduce himself. When his name was called he confidently went forward and began.  

"Hey everyone. My name is Ben Coletti. I am a pure-blood and my father is an Auror. My mom is a healer over at St. Mungo's. An interesting fact about me is that my parents just had a baby girl! Her name is Hannah. So I just became a big brother!" 


The class cheered excitedly and he looked at the black board to see what the next questions were. "I think Charms are things like curses and jinxes that you use your wand for, that you call incantations and move your wand a certain way. Then, the wand creates something or makes it do something different than it usually does. But with Transfiguration, it actually changes something into something else..." 


He looked at the board then and continued. "I am most looking forward to charms that will protect people. I really wanna be able to protect my baby sister and make sure that nothing bad happens to her... I'm not really excited about writing a bunch of things out and studying... I would rather just be doing the spells and practicing them to make sure that I've got it down. I'm not really good at memorizing things so... hopefully I'll figure that out too." 


Ben thought about it a bit and said, "I don't really know too many charms or spells... My parents just used simple ones around us... Dad had to use 'Lumos' once, 'cause we were out camping and we were out on a hike but then it got super dark... So Dad made the light appear so we could find our way home! It was basically like our wand turned into a flashlight. But they usually do most of their magic away from me... they didn't want me to get any ideas," he grinned impishly. 


When he had finished, he went back to his seat amidst the applause from his other classmates.

Introduction: Ben Coletti

B ackstory Ben was born in Hogsmeade to Marcus and Tanya Coletti. Both were magical and taught their son all about the wizarding world as he grew up, preparing him for Hogwarts. Ben became very interested in potions and charms at this age already, watching his father work as an Auror and his mother worked as a healer. His first showing of magic was when he was six years old. He had been at a park with some friends and his best friend was being bullied by some older kids. Ben became very angry and upset and all of a sudden dirt and leaves flew up from the ground and covered the bully so that he was messy all over. It didn't hurt him, but it definitely annoyed him! Everyone was stunned and realized that Ben had the potential to be a great wizard.   Ben was about 9 when his father killed his mother. Defence Against the Dark Arts - Practicing Riddikulus

Before class, I found Shaun (a sixth year Gryffindor) and a fourth year Ravenclaw talking in the staircase. We were talking about previous Dark Arts classes, and how we never really knew what to expect. When it was time to get to class, Shaun and I realized that we didn't have our hats or our robes, so we ran up to the seventh floor, headed to our dorms and got what we needed, then raced to the third floor and up the Dark Arts tower. We arrived just on time and were quite proud of ourselves as the door locked behind us.  Tonight, we were told that we would be practicing the Riddikulus charm. This was a charm that would be used against boggarts. I was a little nervous, but joined the line on the left side of the room, my wand held out. I knew the wand movement and the effect it was supposed to have, but I hadn't practiced it ever, and knew that it was a third level spell.
